Question: What should i look for in a good pool table? what are good brands and etc?

So my little brother (14yrs old) and I (16yrs old) are trying to get our dad to buy a pool table for the house. We are doing are research extensively and are trying to keep the table under about $2,000. I figured I would ask the yahoo community what to look for in a table. We have talked to a few people but some things get confused or you get different answers about things. My dad says that we can't get a Brunswick table (he played pool a lot in college and in England) because of the size and looks. Can someone give me some good facts about pool tables? We need a 8' table with a good 1" slate for sure. Names of good felt and table brands would help. Also, cue brands would also help. We are not planning on spending very much on cues, but we will get some decent ones. Thanks for the help, Akshay Ps: sorry for the Super Long paragraph of information. I need more details into what brands or things are better. We have a few stores we think are good but we still need to do research. Ps: Its a first pool table for our house, but my dad is very experienced with playing pool and my brother and I are pretty experienced. We had a very small one that was like 4' in length that we played on as younger children. (yes, we played correctly not just messed around.)

For your first table start out simple, i have a sportcraft drop pocket in cherry and brass finish, looks great , i got the 7 foot size to fit in my office better, and it only cost 5oo dollars, people are blown away when they see it , like wow dan you are a high roller no wonder we havent seen you out lately. i am the first from my group of college friends to get "class" haha
