Question: What are the spots on the side of pool tables called?

It's simply called Diamond. as you can see the shape was diamond so the term make sense. anyway if ever you wonder what it is for... the diamond was added on the billiard tables ( both Pool and Three Cushion and maybe Snooker ) to calculate where the cue ball may go after hitting rails especially at third times. those calculations are called Diamond system... I believe that the diamond system are more useful when making kick shots..

The ones that look like diamonds? Diamonds , they are used to calculate bank shots.

They are called diamonds or sights. Depending on the table, they can be diamond shaped or circular. See section 6 in the link below.
